On the freezing night of January 28, 2012, a tragedy unfolded on the west side of Detroit, Michigan, claiming the life of a 19-year-old Black male named John Johnson. The events of that evening left a void in the community and questions that have persisted for years without resolution. Johnson was not alone in his final moments; he was accompanied by his girlfriend, 20-year-old Tailar Davis, as they sat together in a vehicle on Richton Street, a residential block that would soon become the
center of a homicide investigation.
Discovering the scene around midnight, authorities found a blue Ford Taurus parked in the 4000 block of Richton, situated between Otsego and Petoskey Roads. Inside the idling car, the bodies of both young people were lifeless. Davis was found positioned in the driver's seat, while Johnson was seated beside her in the passenger seat. Both had sustained fatal gunshot wounds, marking a sudden and violent end to their lives. The discovery prompted an immediate response from local law enforcement and the arrival of emergency personnel, but nothing could be done to save them.
In the wake of the double homicide, detectives scoured the area for witnesses and evidence, struggling to piece together a motive for the execution-style killings. Despite the brutality of the crime and the grief of two families, leads remained scarce. Crime Stoppers of Michigan stepped in to assist, publicizing the case and offering a cash reward of up to $2,500 for information that could lead to an arrest.
