On May 18, 2017, Khmorra Helton, an 8-year-old girl from Dayton, Ohio, tragically died after being shot in the head by her mother, Claudena Helton. Khmorra's younger brother, Kaiden Helton, aged 6, also succumbed to his injuries a few days later. The siblings were critically injured at their home on Lori Sue Avenue and were later pronounced dead at Dayton Children's Hospital.
Following the incident, Claudena Helton was arrested and charged with two counts of attempted murder and four
counts of aggravated assault. However, during the legal proceedings, Helton pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. Psychological evaluations revealed conflicting opinions on her mental state, but ultimately, a judge agreed that she was legally insane at the time of the shootings. Consequently, Helton was institutionalized at Summit Behavioral Healthcare in Cincinnati for treatment.
The tragic case drew significant attention from the community and law enforcement, as it was revealed that county children services had been investigating Helton prior to the shootings. Despite the shocking nature of the crime, neighbors described Helton and her children as seemingly happy and well-adjusted, making the incident even more bewildering.

The court's decision ensured that she would be monitored for the rest of her life, with a six-month review scheduled to assess her progress.
