On May 18, 2017, Kaiden Daniel Helton, a 6-year-old boy from Dayton, Ohio, tragically lost his life after being shot in the head by his mother, Claudena Helton. Kaiden's sister, 8-year-old Khmorra, also succumbed to her injuries a few days later. The siblings were found in critical condition at their home on Lori Sue Avenue and were rushed to Dayton Children's Hospital, where they later passed away.
Claudena Helton, who was 30 years old at the time, was arrested and charged with two counts of attempted murder and four counts of aggravated assault. She was held in Montgomery County Jail and faced additional charges after the deaths of her children. The investigation revealed that Helton had a history of previous allegations involving child endangerment, and Montgomery County Children Services had an open case against her at the time of the shooting.
In January 2019, Claudena Helton entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity. Psychological evaluations concluded that she was not legally sane at the time of the shootings. Judge Dennis Langer accepted the plea and ordered Helton to be institutionalized at Summit Behavioral Healthcare in Cincinnati. The judge scheduled a six-month review to monitor her progress.
The tragic incident deeply affected the community, with neighbors expressing shock and sadness over the loss of the young siblings. The case highlighted the importance of swift action in cases of child abuse and the need for mental health support for those involved.
The Helton family continues to grieve the loss of Kaiden and Khmorra, and the community remains supportive of their healing process.
