On the morning of June 18th, the happy, barefoot child, dressed only in gray boxer shorts and holding a bottle of Nehi soda, was playing near the family's campsite. His parents, Paul and Maxine Barter, were preparing fishing equipment nearby for a day of family fun.
Within a span of just a few minutes, his mother noticed she could no longer see him and a frantic search began. The family scoured the immediate area and the beach, but there was no sign of Danny.
An extensive and immediate search operation was launched, involving law enforcement, military personnel, and civilian volunteers. The land and water were thoroughly examined using bloodhounds, helicopters, divers, and horses. Given the swampy terrain and the presence of alligators, authorities considered the heartbreaking possibility of an animal attack, even going so far as to capture and examine alligators in the vicinity. However, these efforts yielded no evidence to suggest what had happened to the little boy. In a perplexing detail that has haunted the case for decades, not a single trace of him was ever found, not his footprints, not his clothing, and not even the soda bottle he was carrying.
