DeShawn Gott, a 21-year-old African American male from Toledo, Ohio, tragically lost his life on January 23, 2018. He was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting incident that took place around 10 p.m. near Woodland and City Park. When Toledo Police Department officers arrived at the scene, they found Gott slumped over in a car, which had since left the scene.
The vehicle was later found at Toledo Hospital, where Gott was pronounced dead.
The investigation led to the arrest of two teenagers, a 15-year-old and an 18-year-old , who were charged with Gott's murder. The suspects were taken into custody and booked at the Lucas County Juvenile Justice Center. The motive behind the shooting was believed to be a robbery gone wrong, as Gott had posted pictures of himself at Hollywood Casino, claiming he had won big.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, Gott's family and friends have been vocal about their grief and the impact of gun violence on their community. His younger brother, D'Juan Gott, has shared his story and continues to honor DeShawn's memory through various means, including playing basketball, rapping, and starting a clothing line using his brother's signature necklace.
The case saw significant legal proceedings, with one of the suspects, Tavon Tucker, initially charged with murder. Tucker's charges were later reduced to involuntary manslaughter and aggravated robbery after he entered an Alford plea. He was sentenced to a total of 17 years in prison, with 7 years for manslaughter, 7 years for robbery, and 3 years for a gun specification.
DeShawn Gott's death was Toledo's sixth homicide of 2018, highlighting the ongoing issue of gun violence in the city. His memory lives on through the love and support of his family, friends, and community, who continue to seek justice and healing in the wake of this senseless loss.
