Ali Al Azirjawi, a 28-year-old man of Iraqi ethnicity, tragically lost his life on January 25, 2018, in Delaware, Ohio. He was shot and killed during a child custody exchange outside the home of Bryan S. Pemberton, who was the father of Al Azirjawi's fiancée's child. Al Azirjawi had driven his fiancée to Pemberton's residence to pick up her daughter when the incident occurred.
Bryan Pemberton, a 33-year-old man from Delaware, was taken into custody without incident shortly after the
shooting. He was charged with aggravated murder and faced a $5 million bond. During the trial, Pemberton pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. The court found him not guilty by reason of insanity in November 2019. The court determined that Pemberton suffered from a serious mental disease or defect that prevented him from knowing the wrongfulness of his actions.
The tragic event deeply affected Al Azirjawi's family and fiancée. Al Azirjawi, who had moved from Iraq and served in the United States military, was remembered as a caring individual who always put others before himself. His death was the first murder in the City of Delaware since 2011.
