On December 29, 2018, Amadi Noor Bakari, a 19-year-old male of African American ethnicity, was tragically shot and killed in Columbus, Ohio. The incident occurred in the 800 block of Wedgewood Drive around 9:40 p.m. When Columbus Police arrived at the scene, they found Bakari dead, and medics pronounced him dead at 10:20 p.m. The police reported that there were no known suspects at the time, and the motives behind the murder were under investigation.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the
Columbus Police Homicide Unit and Central Ohio Crime Stoppers urged anyone with information to come forward. The case remained unsolved for several months, with the police continuing to investigate possible motives and suspects.
On July 30, 2019, a significant development occurred when Mohamed Weliyou, a 24-year-old man from Columbus, was arrested in San Antonio, Texas, and charged with Bakari's murder. Weliyou was arraigned on one count of murder in Franklin County Municipal Court, and his bond was set at $1 million. As part of his bond conditions, Weliyou was prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition, committing further acts of violence, and contacting witnesses or their families. His next court appearance was scheduled for a preliminary hearing in municipal court.
The arrest of Weliyou brought some closure to the case, but the legal proceedings were ongoing as the court system worked to determine the full extent of his involvement and any potential accomplices. The community continued to mourn the loss of Amadi Noor Bakari, whose life was cut short at such a young age.
