On the evening of November 22, 2019, at approximately 7:17 p.m., Columbus Police officers responded to reports of a shooting near Shady Lane Elementary School, located at 1444 Shady Lane Road in Columbus, Ohio. Upon arrival, they discovered 18-year-old Brenden Martae Brown, a Black male, inside a crashed vehicle. He was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Emergency medical personnel from Columbus Fire Department Engine 4 arrived at the scene and pronounced Brenden deceased at 8:16 p.m.
Investigations revealed that Brenden had been driving near a memorial vigil taking place close to the school when he was shot. Witnesses suggested that the shooter might have been a passenger in Brenden's vehicle. After being shot, Brenden accelerated south on Shady Lane Road, eventually crashing into electric and telephone poles near East Livingston Avenue.
As of now, the motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and no arrests have been made. Brenden's mother, Keeandra Brown, has expressed profound grief over the loss of her only son and is pleading for anyone with information to come forward. She emphasized that her son did not deserve such a tragic fate and that his siblings deeply miss him.
