Investigators revealed that Miles confessed to the killings, stating that he would have continued if he had not been apprehended. Initially, then-Prosecutor Joe Deters sought the death penalty for Miles, but in September 2023, a judge ruled that Miles would no longer face the death penalty due to a diagnosis of Schizoaffective disorder, which qualifies under Ohio law to have a death penalty sentencing thrown out.
Miles was expected to plead guilty to the charges, but during a court appearance in October 2023, he had an outburst and refused to accept the plea agreement. Despite signing the plea, he yelled and expressed his refusal to verbally agree to the charges. The judge ultimately decided that Miles could not knowingly and voluntarily plead guilty, causing the hearing to be rescheduled.
The family of William Bowen III has been vocal about their grief and the impact of this senseless violence. They described him as a loyal friend and devoted family man who was always there for others.
