The investigation into La'Nesha's death revealed that she was shot by Kemari James, a 29-year-old
man who was convicted of her murder and the attempted murder of Andre Haynes. James was found guilty on five counts, including two murder charges, and received a life sentence with the possibility of parole after 32 years. The court heard that James had a history of criminal behavior, including aggravated burglary, felonious assault, and kidnapping.
During the trial, it was revealed that James had intended to shoot Haynes but missed and hit La'Nesha instead. Two of her young children were present in the room at the time of the shooting.
