Gloria Dean Ruth Eddington Lewis, an 89-year-old woman from Warren, Ohio, tragically passed away on February 28, 2021. She was born on October 2, 1931, and was a beloved member of her community. Ms. Lewis was employed with the Labors International Union of North America Local 935 for 15 years before retiring in 1993. She was also the owner and manager of Magic Mirror Barber and Beauty Shop and an assembler for General Motors Packard Electric. She was a dedicated member of Mt.
Sinai Church of God in Christ, where she served as an evangelist, Sunday school teacher, event planner, and Daughter Ruler of the Eastern Stars.
On the day of her death, Ms. Lewis was inside her home on Starlite Street NW, Warren, planning a funeral with a family member when she was fatally shot. The incident occurred when Shamar Askew, then 17 years old, fired multiple rounds into her house from a vehicle. Ms. Lewis was not the intended target, but tragically, she was hit by a bullet in the back. Askew later confessed to the crime and was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison. He also wrote an apology letter to Ms. Lewis' family, expressing his remorse and explaining that he had not intended for the shooting to happen.
The case was moved to Trumbull County Court of Common Pleas, where Askew was tried as an adult. During the sentencing, Ms. Lewis' daughter, Patricia Mallory, addressed the court, expressing the family's grief and sympathy for Askew. Despite their loss, the family showed compassion, hoping that Askew would understand the gravity of his actions.
Ms. Lewis is survived by her four sons, Robert D. Lewis, Eric Lewis, Rodrick Lewis, and Juchard Duncan, all of Warren; two daughters, Patricia Lewis-Mallory and Andria Daniels Talbott, both of Warren; one sister, Grace Lee Owens of Mesa, Arizona; 37 grandchildren; 97 great-grandchildren; and 29 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sons, Conrad James Lewis and Derrick D. Lewis; one daughter, Elise Walton; two brothers, John Pete Eddington and Herbert Eddington; and four sisters, Alvesta Compton, Geneva Compton, Viola Fisher, and Theola Corbin.
The community mourned the loss of Ms. Lewis, who was remembered for her dedication to her family, church, and community. Her funeral services were held on March 10, 2021, at Warren First Assembly of God, with burial following at Pineview Memorial Park Cemetery.
