John Joseph Kovach Jr., a 29-year-old man from Akron, OH, tragically died on December 18, 2020. His death was the result of a shooting incident that occurred at a business in the 1000 block of Brown Street in Akron. Kovach was taken to the hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.
The suspect in this case, Thomas Unrue, 27, of Akron, was charged with murder. However, Unrue later pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter with a firearm specification. The incident took place early in the morning, and it was reported that Kovach had put down his gun before approaching Unrue, who then shot him. Unrue had escaped from custody at the Community Alternative Sentencing Center just a few months prior to the shooting.
During the court proceedings, it was revealed that the argument leading to the shooting involved several people and centered on $250. Unrue's attorney stated that the incident was captured on surveillance camera. Unrue was sentenced to 8 1/2 years in prison for the voluntary manslaughter charge.
