On February 19, 2024, Carlos DeJesus Godineaux, a 26-year-old resident of Akron, Ohio, was shot and killed in a tragic incident that has drawn significant attention from law enforcement and the community. The shooting occurred on Bellevue Avenue near Diagonal Road in Akron's Sherbondy Hill neighborhood. Godineaux was reportedly in the area to sell shoes that he had advertised on Facebook Marketplace when he was attacked.
He suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead shortly after the incident.
Following the shooting, an extensive investigation was launched by the Akron Police Department. Authorities quickly identified two suspects believed to be involved in the crime. A week after Godineaux's death, police arrested a 15-year-old male suspect, who later admitted to one count of murder in juvenile court. This individual is currently serving time with the Ohio Department of Youth Services until he reaches the age of 21.
The second suspect, identified as Jontay Johnson, a 19-year-old from Akron, was apprehended shortly thereafter by the U.S. Marshals Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force. Johnson faced serious charges including conspiracy to commit involuntary manslaughter and conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery. He ultimately pleaded guilty to these charges and was sentenced to a minimum of 15 years in prison for his role in Godineaux's death.
The case has been described by local authorities as a senseless tragedy, particularly highlighting the impact on Godineaux's family, which includes three young children. Summit County Prosecutor Elliot Kolkovich expressed his condolences to the victim's family and emphasized the importance of holding those responsible accountable for their actions.
