At the time, no suspect had been identified, and the Springfield Police Division stated that they did not believe the incident posed a threat to public safety. The community was deeply affected by the loss of Nevaeh and Thomas. Nevaeh was described as a "girly girl" who aspired to be a nurse and was known for her love of getting her hair and nails done. Funeral services for Nevaeh and Thomas were held at Trydestone Baptist Church in Springfield, with visitation starting at 11 a.m. and the service at noon. The family, including their parents, Thomas Stewart and Stacee Hitchens, and other relatives, mourned the loss of the two children.
The investigation into the shooting continues, and the authorities are still searching for any leads that might help identify the perpetrator. The community remains hopeful that justice will be served for Nevaeh and Thomas.
