Hershawna Rias, a 17-year-old Black girl from Cleveland, OH, tragically lost her life on April 8, 2021. Her body was discovered in Martin Luther King Park on Cleveland's east side, with multiple gunshot wounds to her head. The discovery was made by park personnel around 11:40 a.m. Rias had been reported missing just two days prior, on April 6, 2021.
The investigation into her death led to the arrest of 18-year-old Esperanza Lugo from Columbus, OH.
Lugo was charged with aggravated murder and held on a $100,000 bond. He appeared for his felony arraignment in Cleveland Municipal Court, and his appointed attorney requested a preliminary hearing on his behalf. Community activists, including the Imperial Women Coalition, had called for swift action in finding Rias' alleged killer.
