On December 1, 2019, Catera LaShon Fowler, a 19-year-old African American woman from Cleveland, Ohio, lost her life to gun violence outside the Legacy Entertainment Complex on Union Avenue. Catera, affectionately known as “Tera,” was a devoted mother to her one-year-old daughter, Legacy Dior. She had aspirations of becoming both a nurse and a police officer, reflecting her deep commitment to helping others.
The tragic incident unfolded around 1 a.m. when a physical altercation erupted inside the nightclub, prompting security to evacuate all patrons. During the chaos, 26-year-old Eric White Jr. sustained a gunshot wound to the leg while fleeing the premises. In response, he fired back toward the crowd, inadvertently striking Catera in the head and torso. She was transported to University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, where she was later pronounced dead.
Further investigation revealed that another individual, Curtis Johnson, was involved in the fatal shooting. After the initial altercation inside the club, Johnson retrieved a firearm from his vehicle and began shooting down the street in the direction of White and Fowler as they fled. Catera was struck in the lower back, with the bullet exiting through her upper chest, indicating an upward trajectory. Johnson was subsequently convicted of murder, felonious assault, discharge of a firearm on or near prohibited premises, and having weapons while under disability. He received an aggregate sentence of 21 years to life in prison.
Catera's untimely death left her family and community in mourning. Her brother, Montrail Speights, expressed the profound impact of her loss, emphasizing the void left in their lives and the life of her young daughter. A GoFundMe campaign was established to support funeral expenses and provide for Legacy Dior's future.
The incident also raised concerns about security measures at the Legacy Entertainment Complex. Legal experts questioned whether adequate precautions were in place to prevent such violence and whether the establishment could be held accountable for failing to ensure the safety of its patrons.
