On a cold December evening in Detroit, Michigan, tragedy struck, leaving a community in shock and a family grappling with an unbearable loss. It was on December 4, 2012, that 16-year-old Shawn Bender, a Black male, was found deceased inside a residence on the 15000 block of Tacoma, near Brock Avenue. The grim discovery was made at approximately 9:15 p.m. in a modest home on the city's east side.
