On a cold December evening in Detroit, Michigan, tragedy struck, leaving a community in shock and a family grappling with an unbearable loss. It was on December 4, 2012, that 16-year-old Shawn Bender, a Black male, was found deceased inside a residence on the 15000 block of Tacoma, near Brock Avenue. The grim discovery was made at approximately 9:15 p.m. in a modest home on the city's east side.
Shawn was not the only victim of the horrific violence that unfolded that night.
Alongside him, three other individuals lost their lives in what authorities would later describe as an execution-style shooting. The other victims were identified as 34-year-old Dyrelle Davis, 22-year-old Janetta Harris, and 28-year-old Jason Koester. Each of the four victims had been shot in the head, a chilling detail that spoke to the brutal nature of the crime. The scene was discovered by Koester's girlfriend, who had left the house for a short time to get food and returned to a nightmare.
In the wake of the quadruple homicide, the Detroit Police Department launched an intensive investigation. Early speculation arose that the assailants may have posed as police officers to gain entry into the home, though this theory was never officially verified by law enforcement. Despite appeals to the public for any information that could lead to a breakthrough in the case, the investigation has been met with significant challenges.
