Stephen A. González-Gammon, a 22-year-old man from Columbus, Ohio, tragically lost his life on August 26, 2021. He was found shot in the entranceway of an apartment complex on Heatherbridge Lane in the Blacklick area of Columbus. Despite the efforts of officers and paramedics, González-Gammon succumbed to his injuries at Mount Carmel East Hospital.
This incident marked the 140th homicide in Columbus for the year 2021.
The investigation into González-Gammon's death revealed that Kejhier Burnett, a 21-year-old man from the North Side of Columbus, was involved in the shooting. Burnett was later sentenced to 14-19 ½ years in prison after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter and possessing a gun illegally. Initially, two other individuals, Tyree Burke and Micah Norwood, both 18 at the time, faced murder charges but were not indicted due to insufficient evidence. Burnett's defense attorney argued that Burke and Norwood planned the robbery and provided Burnett with the gun.
The case brought significant emotional impact on González-Gammon's family, who described him as a loving brother and uncle. During the sentencing, several family members, including his sisters, were present and expressed their grief and loss.
The Columbus Division of Police continues to investigate the case and has urged anyone with information to come forward. The community remains hopeful that justice will be served for Stephen A. González-Gammon and his family.
