Donnie Ferguson, a 43-year-old man from Columbus, OH, tragically lost his life on September 6, 2021. Police identified Brandon Lee Smith, a 32-year-old man, as the suspect in Ferguson's death.
Smith was arrested without incident in the 1800 block of North 4th Street. Initial investigations suggested that Ferguson was involved in a confrontation earlier in the day, which may have led to the shooting. Smith was charged with murder in connection to Ferguson's death.
However, after a six-day trial, a Franklin County jury found Brandon Lee Smith not guilty of all charges related to Ferguson's death. The jury concluded that Smith did not know Ferguson and that he was not responsible for the shooting. Surveillance video showed Smith's car at the apartment complex during the shooting, but Smith testified that he was there to see someone else and left after hearing gunfire. The Franklin County Prosecutor's Office declined to comment after the verdict.
