Rycheous McKinney, a 16-year-old Black male, was tragically killed on November 4, 2021, in Columbus, Ohio. McKinney was a sophomore at East High School and a member of the school's football team, where he wore number 23. He was known for his dedication and hard work on the field, and his teammates and coach remembered him fondly. On the night of his death, McKinney was found in the back of a location on Willamont Avenue with a gunshot wound. Despite being rushed to Grant Medical Center for life-saving treatment, he succumbed to his injuries at 9:32 p.m.
The Columbus Police Department responded to the incident and launched an investigation. As of now, the case remains unsolved, and the police are still searching for suspects. This tragic event marked the city's 174th homicide of the year. The community continues to mourn the loss of McKinney, whose smile and positive attitude left a lasting impact on those who knew him.
