On the evening of Independence Day, July 4, 2022, an argument broke out between two people in Toledo, Ohio. The dispute took place around 8:00 p.m. near the intersection of City Park Avenue and Greene Street. During the confrontation, Scott Gallagher, a 58-year-old man, was shot.
When police officers arrived at the scene, they found Scott outside near the sidewalk with at least one gunshot wound. He was transported to an area hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
The Lucas County Coroner’s Office subsequently performed an autopsy and determined that Scott’s death was a homicide caused by a gunshot wound to the chest.
Witnesses told investigators that the shooting stemmed from the argument they had observed. The police investigation soon identified a suspect, Randy Spurlock. In November 2022, a Lucas County Grand Jury indicted Spurlock on charges of murder and felonious assault, both with a three-year gun specification, for the shooting death of Scott Gallagher. Spurlock initially pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The case proceeded through the court system over the following months. The legal proceedings concluded in May 2023, when Randy Spurlock pleaded guilty to a charge of voluntary manslaughter for his role in Scott Gallagher's death.
