Bryan S. McCoy Sr., a 42-year-old Black man from Toledo, Ohio, was remembered by his family as a loving father who cherished spending time with his children and always desired to make them happy. Born and raised in Toledo, he attended Woodward High School and worked several jobs over the years, including as a factory warehouse worker and a Direct Support Professional. Those who knew him said he could light up a room with his smile and laughter.
He was especially close with his brother, Andre, who was his best friend and confidant.
On the evening of October 4, 2024, McCoy’s life was cut short. Around 9:00 p.m., Toledo police officers responded to reports of a shooting in the 3600 block of Greenway Street. Upon arrival, they found Bryan McCoy suffering from a gunshot wound. First responders declared him dead at the scene.
The investigation quickly led police to identify 25-year-old Hassan Diab as a suspect. Officers located Diab at his home, arrested him, and booked him into the Lucas County Jail. A grand jury subsequently indicted Diab on charges of Aggravated Murder, Murder, Felonious Assault, and Tampering with Evidence. While authorities have not released a possible motive for the shooting, charging documents state that police have video evidence of the incident.
During legal proceedings, Diab's fitness for trial was evaluated. On November 25, 2024, a judge found him incompetent to stand trial, noting a "substantial probability" that his competency could be restored with treatment. Diab was ordered to be committed to Northwest Ohio Behavioral Healthcare for a period of up to one year. As of November 2024, the case is pending the outcome of his treatment.
