Anthony Wynn, a 50-year-old Black man and father from Euclid, Ohio, was killed in a shooting on the evening of December 3, 2022. The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. at a Shell gas station at the corner of St. Clair Avenue and East 110th Street in Cleveland. According to police, Mr. Wynn was at one gas pump while another man, Bobby D. Buchanan Jr., was at a separate pump. Buchanan shot Mr. Wynn in the abdomen and thigh before fleeing the scene. Mr.
Wynn was taken to University Hospitals, where he died from his injuries.
Cleveland police quickly identified Buchanan as the suspect and arrested him the following day, on December 4, 2022. Buchanan was subsequently indicted on charges of aggravated murder, murder, attempted murder, felonious assault, failure to comply with an order of a police officer, and having weapons while under disability. He was held at the Cuyahoga County Justice Center on a $1 million bond while awaiting trial.
The case against Buchanan went to a bench trial, presided over by Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas Judge John Sutula, which began on September 4, 2024. The trial also addressed two other separate criminal incidents involving Buchanan: a non-fatal shooting in November 2022 and a high-speed chase with police in December 2022.
On October 16, 2024, Judge Sutula found Buchanan guilty of all charges, including the aggravated murder of Anthony Wynn. At the sentencing hearing, Mr. Wynn’s daughter addressed the court, telling Buchanan, “You make me question our father above because you took someone with such a beautiful soul. If my father could have lived he may have possibly forgiven you and may have shown more mercy than I can.” Buchanan’s defense attorney spoke of his client's mental illnesses, including schizophrenia, in a plea for future parole eligibility.
In November 2024, Judge Sutula sentenced Bobby Buchanan Jr. to life in prison. He will have his first opportunity for parole after serving 40 years.
