William Monroe, a 50-year-old male police officer from Salisbury, North Carolina, was shot and killed on February 13, 1909. Monroe was attempting to arrest a man for wife beating when he was fatally shot. The suspect was apprehended four months later in Sweetwater, Tennessee, but turned out to be the wrong person.
