William Monroe, a 50-year-old male police officer from Salisbury, North Carolina, was shot and killed on February 13, 1909. Monroe was attempting to arrest a man for wife beating when he was fatally shot. The suspect was apprehended four months later in Sweetwater, Tennessee, but turned out to be the wrong person. Over the next six years, several suspects were detained in North Carolina and Virginia, but none were ultimately charged with Monroe's murder. The case remains unsolved, and the killer ...
