Special Agent Gregory W. Spinelli, born on March 8, 1949, in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, was a 24-year-old Caucasian male when he tragically lost his life on March 15, 1973, in Charlotte, North Carolina. He was an FBI agent who had joined the bureau in 1970 as a Physical Science Technician and later became a special agent in 1972.
On the day of his death, Special Agent Spinelli was part of a team staking out a motel room used by Arthur Tilmer Mankins and Bonnie Lou Logan, who were suspects in a savings and loan robbery. When the suspects attempted to leave their room, Logan was arrested, but Mankins fled to a nearby wooded area and then to an apartment building under construction. Special Agent Spinelli pursued Mankins to the rear of the building, where he was fatally shot. Another agent managed to apprehend Mankins, who was later convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Special Agent Spinelli.
The incident was a tragic end to a promising career, and Special Agent Spinelli is remembered for his dedication and bravery. He is buried in Saint Bernard's Cemetery in Indiana, Pennsylvania.
