Known as "Jimmy" to his friends, Adams was a dedicated police officer who had served the Raleigh Police Department for 13 years. On the night of his death, Officer Adams was making a DUI arrest. After placing the female suspect in the back of his squad car, he sat in the driver's seat. Unbeknownst to him, the suspect had a concealed handgun.
She produced the weapon and shot Officer Adams in the back of the head through the patrol car's cage.
The suspect, a 29-year-old woman, was arrested and subsequently sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Officer Adams. As of June 11, 2023, she remains incarcerated.
