Donald Ray Tucker, a 22-year-old male police officer with the Clinton Police Department in North Carolina, was shot and killed on November 14, 1991. Officer Tucker was working undercover on a drug operation with a multi-agency task force in Carteret County when he was murdered. During his final drug purchase for the task force, two suspects robbed and shot him.
Both suspects were apprehended shortly after the incident.
The gunman was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison on April 3, 1992. Officer Tucker had been employed with the Clinton Police Department for only one year at the time of his death. He is survived by his son, parents, brother, and sister. The Clinton Police Department has since created a memorial in front of their headquarters to honor Officer Tucker's sacrifice.
In recent years, Officer Tucker's family has been advocating for a bridge in Clinton to be named in his honor. Despite their efforts, the resolution to name the bridge was voted down during a city council meeting. The family remains hopeful that the bridge will eventually be named after Officer Tucker to recognize his service and sacrifice.
