Paul Herman Futrell, a 36-year-old male, was a deputy sheriff with the Hertford County Sheriff's Office in North Carolina. On September 18, 1992, he responded to a domestic disturbance call in Winton, NC. The incident involved a father who was refusing to return his daughter's child. As Deputy Futrell attempted to resolve the situation, the father shot him in the head, resulting in his immediate death.
The suspect, Nehemiah Pope Jr., aged 47 at the time, was arrested shortly after the
incident without incident by then-deputy sheriff Sgt. Rodney Pennington and Winton Police Chief Chris Williams. Pope was indicted on charges of first-degree murder. He was later found guilty of second-degree murder and sentenced to 50 years in prison. Pope died in prison on October 4, 2008.
Deputy Futrell, a United States Marine Corps veteran, had served with the Hertford County Sheriff's Department for two years. He is survived by his wife and two children. His death marked the first time a Hertford County Deputy Sheriff was killed in the line of duty.
