Amari Reshad McCaskill, a 20-year-old Black man, was tragically shot and killed on August 20, 2019, in Charlotte, North Carolina. The incident occurred on West Trade Street, where Amari was found with a life-threatening gunshot wound. Despite being transported to Atrium Health’s Carolinas Medical Center, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Following the shooting, an investigation led to the arrest of 21-year-old Algia Clark Jr., who was charged with
Amari's murder. The authorities identified Clark as a suspect through their continued investigation and took him into custody without incident. Witnesses reported that the shooting took place in a restaurant parking lot, and it was preceded by a fight between two individuals. The incident also prompted an emergency alert to students at Johnson C. Smith University, warning them of a possible active shooter near the campus.
Amari's death was a significant loss to his family and friends, who remembered him as a kind, gentle, and mild-mannered father. He was survived by his parents, Ms. Kimberly McCaskill and Mr. Willie Springs, his daughter Jasmine, and his son A'mari Jr., among other relatives. The community mourned his passing and held memorial services to honor his memory.
