Jennifer Renee Short, a 9-year-old Caucasian girl, was tragically murdered on August 15, 2002. Her parents, Michael and Mary Short, were found shot to death in their home in Bassett, Virginia. Michael was discovered on a couch in the garage, while Mary was found in her bed. Both had been shot in the head with a small-caliber gun. The couple's daughter, Jennifer, was initially missing, leading to a massive search effort.
Unfortunately, her remains were found a month later near a stream in Rockingham County, North Carolina. Jennifer had also been shot in the head.
The investigation into the Short family's murders has been extensive but remains unsolved. In August 2015, Henry County Sheriff Lane Perry announced that the motive for the murders might have been the abduction of Jennifer. The FBI has provided a list of 19 clues to help solve the mystery, including identifying any person who was in contact with Jennifer between June 1, 2002, and August 14, 2002. Investigators have also identified a possible vehicle associated with the crime, described as a 1998-2002 white, single-cab, two-ton flatbed stake body truck with wooden rails.
Despite the efforts of law enforcement, including the formation of a special task force, the case remains unsolved. The Short family's home burned down in February 2019, adding another layer of complexity to the investigation. The community continues to remember Jennifer and her family, with annual events and scholarships in her name.
