Joel Solis Recio, a 24-year-old Latino construction worker, was brutally murdered on January 10, 2003, in Charlotte, North Carolina. The circumstances surrounding his death were harrowing. Recio was tortured, stabbed, and burned by his captors, who were attempting to extract information about the location of his marijuana stash. The ordeal culminated in his execution-style killing on an Interstate 277 exit ramp, where he was gunned down in view of passing motorists and onlookers from nearby
offices and apartments. Recio's hands and legs were bound, and his mouth was sealed with duct tape. He had attempted to escape from a car, but as a utility worker tried to assist him, a man with a camouflage bandana covering his face approached and shot Recio with a sawed-off shotgun.
The investigation into Recio's murder led to the arrest and charging of six men. Robert Moore III, 25, Todd D. Gaston, 26, and Antoine L. Sloan, 32, were identified as the primary suspects and faced capital charges. The three other defendants, Rodney Dale Payne, 22, Stevie Bernard Walker, 31, and Darrell Monroe Young, 27, were also charged with murder, kidnapping, and armed robbery. Prosecutors revealed that the motive for the kidnapping and subsequent murder was to steal Recio's marijuana. Additionally, Gaston, Payne, and Sloan were implicated in the December 31 killing of Lamar Joe Watson, for which they also faced murder charges.
The legal proceedings against the suspects were intense, with Mecklenburg prosecutors seeking the death penalty for Moore, Gaston, and Sloan. Assistant District Attorney David Graham identified Moore as the triggerman during a hearing. The case highlighted the brutal lengths to which individuals would go to obtain drugs and the severe consequences of such actions. The community was left reeling from the violence and the tragic loss of a young life.
