In the early morning hours of July 22, 2023, a burst of gunfire shattered the quiet on Chandler Park Drive in Detroit, leaving a scene of violence that would claim the life of Thomas Davis. The 26-year-old Black man was with two other individuals when a vehicle reportedly pulled up, and shots were fired in their direction. When police arrived at the 17710 block of Chandler Park Drive at approximately 2:02 a.m., they found Davis suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced deceased. The two other victims, a 26-year-old and an 18-year-old, were also struck by the gunfire but survived the attack.
The investigation into the drive-by shooting moved swiftly, and within days, the Detroit Police Department had identified and apprehended three suspects. On July 24, 25-year-old Alexis Childs was taken into custody. Two days later, on July 26, police arrested 26-year-old Elisha Dejuan Hill and a 15-year-old male in connection with the fatal shooting. The motive for the shooting is believed to have stemmed from an alleged dispute, which tragically escalated to deadly violence. Witnesses at the scene reported seeing a black SUV involved in the incident.
Following the arrests, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office brought forth a series of serious charges against the three individuals. Alexis Childs, Elisha Dejuan Hill, and the 15-year-old juvenile were all charged with one count of first-degree murder for the death of Thomas Davis. Additionally, they each face two counts of assault with intent to murder for the injuries sustained by the other two victims, and three counts of felony firearm. While the juvenile is being charged as an adult-designated defendant, which allows for more sentencing flexibility if convicted, both Childs and Hill were arraigned and remanded to jail. The community and family of Thomas Davis have been left to mourn his sudden and violent death as the legal proceedings against the accused get underway.
