Jerry Yi Avant Jr., a 39-year-old male nurse, was tragically killed on March 29, 2009, in Carthage, North Carolina. Jerry, who had served ten years in the Coast Guard, was working at the Pinelake Health and Rehab Center when a gunman opened fire. Jerry was shot multiple times while trying to protect others from the gunman. His heroic actions saved many lives, but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries.
