Jeffrey Dowd, a 55-year-old man, was tragically shot and killed near Carthage, North Carolina, on January 18, 2017. The incident occurred at a mobile home located in the 100 block of Murdocksville Road around 6:15 p.m. The Moore County Sheriff's Office reported that the shooting stemmed from an argument between Dowd and Gregory Thomas Short, a 62-year-old man from West End.
Following the altercation, Short called 911 and waited at the end of a dirt road to flag down responding emergency vehicles. When first responders arrived, they found Dowd deceased at the scene.
Short was subsequently arrested and charged with one count of felony murder and one count of felony possession of a firearm by a felon. He was taken to the Moore County Detention Center in Carthage, where he was held without bond. His first court appearance was scheduled for February 14, 2017. The case drew significant attention from local law enforcement and emergency services, including Carthage Fire & Rescue, Moore County EMS, the State Medical Examiner's Office, and the Moore County Sheriff's Office, all of whom responded to the scene.
