On June 24, 2017, Darrel Long, a 63-year-old man from Carthage, NC, was found dead in a camper on Union Pines Drive. Long, who was living in the camper, had been shot once in the chest. The incident began the night before when Long had a physical altercation with Jayne McRee, who told him he had to move out. During the argument, Long grabbed Jayne McRee by the neck.
After the altercation, Long returned to the camper for the night.
The following morning, Jayne McRee contacted her son, Adam McRee , who came to Long's camper with a .38 Special caliber revolver. McRee shot Long once in the chest and then left the scene. Long succumbed to his injuries from the gunshot wound. Detectives later recovered text messages between McRee and his mother, which showed that McRee intended to kill Long.
The Moore County Sheriff’s Office and several other agencies worked diligently on the investigation. In April 2023, a Moore County jury found Adam McRee guilty of first-degree murder. McRee was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The case was prosecuted by District Attorney Mike Hardin, Assistant District Attorney Drew Cochran, and Assistant District Attorney Brian Chapman. The jury's two-week service was commended for their diligent work in presenting the case.
