Richard Brian "Ricky" Suttles, a 17-year-old male from Greensboro, North Carolina, tragically lost his life on November 20, 2011. Ricky was one of the victims in a horrific shooting spree carried out by his aunt, Mary Ann Holder. The incident, which took place in the Pleasant Grove community south of Greensboro, resulted in the deaths of six individuals, including Holder herself.
Mary Ann Holder, a 36-year-old woman, had been involved in a tumultuous affair with Randall Lamb, a married man. The relationship had been fraught with accusations of stalking and harassment, leading to a bitter end. On the morning of the shooting, Holder shot Lamb in a community college parking lot before driving away to pick up her son, Zachary Smith.
Holder's rampage continued as she shot and killed her two sons, Robert Dylan Smith, 17, and Zachary Smith, 14, along with her eight-year-old niece, Hannaleigh Suttles. Ricky Suttles, who was also in the house, was critically injured and later succumbed to his injuries. The victims were found with gunshot wounds to the head, and it appeared that they had been shot while they slept in a bedroom and the living room.
Authorities discovered two handguns inside Holder's vehicle, including one in her lap. She left two notes taking responsibility for the killings, but the contents of these notes were not disclosed. An autopsy was performed on Holder, and police awaited the results of toxicology tests, although initial findings suggested no signs of drug use.
The investigation into the case revealed that Holder had been raising Ricky Suttles and her niece Hannaleigh after the death of her sister-in-law. The tragic incident left the community in shock and mourning, as they grappled with the senseless loss of young lives.
