Makayla Leigh "Kayla" Woods, a 15-year-old girl from Greensboro, North Carolina, tragically passed away on November 23, 2011. Makayla was a victim of a murder-suicide rampage carried out by Mary Ann Holder, a 36-year-old woman. Holder's shooting spree resulted in the deaths of multiple individuals, including Makayla, who was a family friend.
The incident began when Holder, who had been involved in a lengthy extramarital affair with Randy Lamb, faced an "alienation of affection" lawsuit
from Lamb's wife. In an attempt to settle the matter, Holder gave Lamb a $10,000 check the day before the shooting spree. On the morning of the rampage, Holder shot Lamb in the arm in an airport parking lot before returning home to open fire on four minors sleeping under her roof.
Makayla Woods, along with Holder's 17-year-old son Robert Smith, 14-year-old son Zachary Smith, and 8-year-old niece Hannaleigh Suttles, were all shot by Holder. Makayla was placed on life support but ultimately succumbed to her injuries on November 23, 2011. The motive behind Holder's actions remains unclear, with authorities investigating whether the stressful situation triggered the violent outburst.
The tragic event left the community in shock, as Holder was described as a well-liked individual who loved the children. The investigation into the incident revealed that Holder had left two suicide notes in different handwriting in separate rooms, further complicating the case.
