Cynthia Jeanette Joyner, a 41-year-old woman from Rocky Mount, North Carolina, tragically lost her life on April 26, 2012, in a murder-suicide incident. Joyner, who worked as a waitress at the Westridge Grill, was found shot to death inside the restaurant where she was employed. The incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. as workers were preparing for the lunch rush.
Joyner was shot multiple times by Carlos Whitaker, a 37-year-old man from Rocky Mount, who then took his own life in a wooded area behind the restaurant.
The police investigation revealed that the shooting was a domestic violence situation. Although investigators did not initially disclose the nature of the relationship between Joyner and Whitaker, it was later confirmed by one of Joyner's sons that the two were married but had been estranged for several months. Joyner, a mother of four, was described by friends and family as a beautiful person who was taken away too soon.
No other injuries were reported in the incident, and the police were not looking for any additional suspects. The bodies of Joyner and Whitaker were taken to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville for autopsies. The tragic event left the community in shock, with many gathering at the restaurant to grieve and remember Joyner.
