Jennifer Merriman, a 17-year-old black female, tragically lost her life on September 6, 2014, in Richfield, North Carolina. The incident occurred during a domestic disturbance involving her sister, Julia Moody, and Julia's estranged husband, Montannez Moody. Montannez Moody, a 33-year-old black male, forcibly entered the home by breaking a window and opened fire, resulting in the death of Jennifer Merriman and the serious injury of 54-year-old Bernice Merriman, who is Julia's aunt. Julia Moody, who had taken out a restraining order against Montannez, was initially thought to have been kidnapped but was later found unharmed, hiding in a closet with her two infant sons.
Following the shooting, Montannez Moody fled the scene and embarked on a crime spree across multiple counties. He kidnapped a couple at gunpoint in Guilford County, forcing the male victim to exit the vehicle and driving off with the female victim. The female victim later escaped and reported that Montannez had raped her. Authorities tracked Montannez to Edgecombe County, where he was found deceased in a swampy area. It is believed that he died from a drug overdose.
Rowan County deputies issued warrants for Montannez Moody's arrest on charges of first-degree murder, attempted murder, first-degree burglary, and violation of a domestic violence order. The investigation revealed that the shootings were a result of an ongoing domestic situation between Montannez and Julia Moody, who were scheduled to appear in court regarding the domestic violence order.
