Ivery Montreat Elliott, a 34-year-old African American male, passed away on April 5, 2015, in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He was found dead in a house on the 300 block of Dick Street, near downtown Fayetteville. The incident occurred shortly after 5 a.m. on Easter morning. Elliott was shot to death during a party at an illegal liquor house, where multiple people were present.
Izaak Eugene Bridges, a 43-year-old male, was arrested 10 days after the shooting and charged with first-degree
murder, two counts of attempted first-degree murder, and two counts of felony assault. Bridges was accused of killing Ivery Montreat Elliott and injuring two other individuals, Brandon Alexander Siermons and Winfred Terell Lesane, who were also shot during the incident.
The case against Bridges faced significant challenges due to the reluctance of key witnesses to testify. Prosecutors Bella Truong and Rob Thompson believed that Bridges committed the crimes, but the witnesses grew reluctant to testify and became difficult to contact. This reluctance was speculated to be due to pressure from the street. As a result, the charges of murder and attempted murder against Bridges were dismissed in January 2017.
Despite the dismissal of charges, the state retained the option to charge Bridges again if witnesses came forward to testify against him. At the time of the case dismissal, Bridges was serving 18 months of probation for an unrelated drug possession charge.
