Kevin Lamont Stephens, also known as "Kel-bo," was a 29-year-old African American male who tragically lost his life on July 4, 2015, in Lumberton, North Carolina. Kevin was found shot in the area of Meadowview apartments at approximately 5:15 AM and was pronounced dead at Southeastern Regional Medical Center. The Lumberton Police Department responded to a call of shots fired at the Meadowview Road housing complex and discovered Kevin near apartment 10.
The police were assisted by the District Attorney’s Office investigator in the case.
Kevin Lamont Stephens was born on March 17, 1986, in Lumberton, NC, to Mr. Jeffery Ray Stephens and the late Ms. Gloria Ann Bethea. He was known for his big smile and his love for family. Kevin left behind three daughters, Naomi Stephens, Niomi Stephens, and Kamori Knight, and four sons, Dakarie Mitchell, Daquan Mitchell, Prosperity Stephens, and Confident Stephens, all of Lumberton, NC. He also had three sisters, Shakiea Bethea, Selena Bethea, and Katrina Bethea, and three brothers, Jeffery Bethea, Jamar Graham, and Christopher Bethea.
The investigation into Kevin's death revealed that two people were being questioned by the police. One of the individuals being questioned suffered a leg injury during the shooting. However, information on the condition and identity of the injured person was not available at the time. The Lumberton Police Department urged anyone with information about the shooting to contact Detective Dereck Evans.
Kevin's death marked the second homicide in Lumberton within four days. On the preceding Wednesday night, 23-year-old Ryan Smith was found shot and sitting in a vehicle near the intersection of Beech Court and Spruce Streets. Smith, who had lived in Dublin, was later pronounced dead at Southeastern Regional Medical Center. The police were actively seeking information in both cases to bring justice to the victims and their families.
