Tammy Annette Cloninger, a 40-year-old woman from Hickory, North Carolina, tragically lost her life on February 15, 2016. Tammy, who was of Caucasian ethnicity, was shot and killed by her boyfriend, James Willard Thacker. The incident occurred behind a home on 11th Street Northwest in Hickory. Following the shooting, Tammy was transported to Frye Regional Medical Center, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
James Willard Thacker, aged 35 at the time, was arrested and charged with
second-degree murder in connection with Tammy's death. Thacker had been in jail for three and a half years before his trial. During the trial, Thacker pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to 21 to 26 years in prison. The Honorable Karen Eady-Williams, Superior Court Judge from Mecklenburg County, imposed the sentence, emphasizing that the crime was a result of a horrible choice that did not have to happen.
During the court proceedings, Thacker expressed remorse for his actions, apologizing to Tammy's family and stating that he wished it had been him instead of her. Tammy's father, Steve Cloninger, and brother, Tony Cloninger, addressed the court, sharing the profound impact her death had on their lives. They spoke about the loss of a daughter, sister, and mother, and the emotional toll it had taken on them over the past three and a half years.
The investigation into Tammy's death was led by Lt. Justin Levey of the Hickory Police Department. Assistant District Attorney Melanie Earles prosecuted the case for the state. The court proceedings provided some measure of closure for Tammy's family, although the pain of her loss remains a constant presence in their lives.
