Quajuae Alexus Kennedy, a 21-year-old African American woman, tragically lost her life on April 7, 2017, in Hickory, North Carolina. The incident occurred in the parking lot of McCroskey’s Irish Pub and Grill, where Kennedy, along with two other 21-year-olds, Justin Michael Aiken and Cody Manood Bouphavong, were fatally shot. The shooting took place around 2:15 a.m. when the victims were sitting in a car.
According to witnesses, a car circled the parking lot with a man hanging out of the window holding an assault rifle, while another man approached the car from behind and started firing into the vehicle. The victims were taken to a nearby hospital, but unfortunately, Kennedy succumbed to her injuries.
The investigation revealed that there was no apparent connection between the victims and the suspects. The two men responsible for the shooting, Greydon Keith Hansen and Dontray Tyrell Cumberlander, both 28 years old, were arrested and charged with the murders. They pleaded guilty to three counts of second-degree murder, one count of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, and one count of discharging a weapon into an occupied vehicle. Both men were sentenced to 64 to 82 years in prison.
The court proceedings were emotional, with the families of the victims expressing their grief and sorrow. Assistant District Attorney Lance Sigmon stated that there was no plausible explanation for the senseless killings and that no punishment could bring back the young lives lost. The lengthy prison sentences were intended to ensure that Hansen and Cumberlander would not pose a threat to the community in the future.
