Richelle was found lying on the ground near the playground area, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The shooting also involved another victim, Cody William Watts, a 28-year-old man, who was found sitting in his vehicle with gunshot wounds. Cody was taken to the hospital in critical condition and later succumbed to his injuries on March 4, 2016.
The investigation revealed that the shooting was the result of a domestic dispute. Eric Terril Yount, a 22-year-old man, was identified as the suspect in the case. Eric had previously been in a relationship with Richelle, and the two had recently ended their relationship. On the day of the incident, Eric confronted Richelle and Cody in the parking lot of the McDonald's. An argument ensued, during which Eric retrieved a handgun from his vehicle and began firing. Richelle was struck in the head and died instantly, while Cody was shot multiple times in the neck and chest.
Eric Terril Yount was arrested shortly after the incident and charged with first-degree murder for the death of Richelle Scott Lail and attempted murder for the shooting of Cody William Watts. Following Cody's death, the charges against Eric were upgraded to include a second count of murder. The case proceeded to trial, and on February 10, 2021, Eric pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder. He was sentenced to serve 50 to 62 years in prison for the double homicide.
