Anderson, who was born on August 2, 1988, in Rowan County, was the son of William Anderson, Jr. and Adrienne Bailey Anderson. He was educated in the Rowan County schools and previously worked as an assembler. Anderson was a member of the Word of Life Family Worship Center and was survived by his wife, Gemisha Nicole Anderson, and daughter, Jayla Kyael

On the morning of April 15, 2016, the Davidson County Sheriff's Office received a call reporting a vehicle crash into a storage shed. Upon arrival, deputies discovered the bodies of Joseph Dominique Anderson and Kevin Michael Caldwell, both 27 years old, inside a black 2007 Crown Victoria Ford. The vehicle had traveled off the road, through two front yards, and crashed into a shed. Both men were found with gunshot wounds, and it was determined that their deaths were not a result of the car crash.
The investigation into the deaths of Anderson and Caldwell revealed that they had been shot before the car crash. The Davidson County Sheriff's Office treated the case as a homicide and conducted a thorough search of the area for evidence, including bullet casings, weapons, and car parts. The victims' bodies were transported to the Medical Examiner's Office in Raleigh for autopsies.
