Andrew Jacob DeRenzy, a 16-year-old teenager from Hope Mills, North Carolina, was found dead on May 28, 2016. His body was discovered lying face down on McKinnon Farm Road, blindfolded and shot to death. The police investigation revealed that Andrew had been executed in an unpaved section of the road, with two bullets found in the dirt beneath his body. A bloodied baseball bat and .380 caliber revolver bullet casings were also found at the scene.
Andrew's family reported him missing on May 30, 2016, after being unable to reach him for two days. The next day, they were asked to identify the body and learned that Andrew had been murdered. Additionally, $120 was stolen from Andrew, and his car was missing. The vehicle was eventually located on June 20, 2016, with the person in possession claiming it had been sold to them.
The investigation into Andrew's death led to the arrest of six young men. Devon Scott Hall, 18, and Rashad Revels, 20, were charged with first-degree murder, first-degree kidnapping, robbery with a dangerous weapon, and conspiracy. Daniel Worth Hall Jr., 20, Devon's brother, was charged with accessory to murder after allegedly providing misleading information to the police and helping to dispose of evidence. Further arrests included Ian Robinson, who was also charged with murder, and brothers Darius and Daante Walker, who were charged with accessory to murder. The police concluded that Devon Hall had been the one who pulled the trigger and killed Andrew.
The motive for the murder remains unclear, but the police suggested that narcotics played a part, and there were rumors of gang-related activity. Andrew had been living with his sister and her husband at the time of his death. On the morning of May 27, 2016, Andrew called his brother-in-law, mentioning car trouble but refusing help. Later, it was discovered that Andrew had withdrawn $120 from his sister's checking account, which was unusual behavior for him. The police initially investigated the possibility of a robbery.
The case garnered significant attention, and the community was shocked by the brutal nature of the crime. Devon Hall was ultimately sentenced to life in prison for his role in Andrew's murder. The other suspects faced various charges and legal proceedings related to their involvement in the crime.
