Rechard Delane Mickle, a 35-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on August 20, 2016, in Charlotte, North Carolina. Mickle's death was the result of a shooting incident that occurred in the Steele Creek area. On the day of the incident, officers initially located an abandoned vehicle on South Tryon Street after reports of a shooting, but no victim was found at the scene.
The following day, Mount Holly Police contacted the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department about a gunshot victim, later identified as Mickle, being dropped off at CaroMont Regional Medical Center. Mickle was pronounced dead a short time later. CMPD later learned that Mickle had been shot on South Tryon Street before being taken to CaroMont for treatment.
The investigation into Mickle's death led to the arrest of Kedar Aziz Muhammad, a 22-year-old male, who was charged with first-degree murder in connection with the shooting. Muhammad was found guilty of first-degree murder on December 14, 2018, after jurors spent less than three hours deliberating. The trial began on December 4, 2018, and Muhammad was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Charges are also pending against a co-defendant in the case.
