Paul Shuping, a 63-year-old Navy veteran, tragically ended his life on February 15, 2017, in Durham, North Carolina. Shuping, who was a white male, parked his car at the Durham VA Medical Center and used an old family .22-caliber rifle to commit suicide. His body was not discovered until six days later. Shuping's death highlights the struggles many veterans face in obtaining disability benefits and the emotional toll it can take on them.
