Peggy Jo Finch Whitley, a 67-year-old woman from Enfield, North Carolina, tragically lost her life on August 21, 2017. She was killed alongside her husband, James Whitley, and their friends, Janice and James Harris, while they were playing cards at the Harris' home. The victims were all white.

The investigation into their deaths revealed that the killings were likely targeted and possibly gang-related. Four men were initially charged with the murders: Matthew Lewis Simms, Keyon Quarice West, James Edward Powell, and Dontayvious Devonte "Moochie" Cotton. However, charges were later dropped against Simms, West, and Cotton due to recanted accusations by Powell. Powell eventually took an Alford plea, admitting guilt while maintaining his innocence, and received four consecutive life sentences for the murders.

The case drew significant attention due to the racial dynamics involved, as Powell's defense argued that the death penalty was unconstitutional given the racial backgrounds of the victims and the accused. Despite these arguments, the judge ruled there was enough evidence to pursue a possible death sentence against Powell.

The families of the victims have endured years of pain and suffering, and the resolution in court brought some semblance of closure, although the loss of their loved ones remains a profound tragedy.
