Travis Lee Vogt, a 36-year-old white male from Asheboro, North Carolina, was found dead on February 20, 2018, from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The events leading up to his death began on February 15, 2018, when Asheboro Officer Leah Burnette stopped Vogt for speeding through a stoplight at the intersection of Fayetteville and Salisbury streets. During the traffic stop, Officer Burnette suspected that Vogt had been drinking and asked him to take a sobriety test.
Instead of complying, Vogt attempted to flee, leading the officer on a high-speed chase through the streets of Asheboro. The chase ended when Vogt lost control of the 1961 Corvette he was driving and crashed into Zeko's Pizza at the intersection of Fayetteville and Allred streets, causing an estimated $30,000 in damage to both the car and the restaurant.
Following the crash, it was discovered that Vogt did not own the Corvette and did not have permission from the car's owner, Michael Johnston, to drive it. A warrant was issued for Vogt's arrest on charges of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and several other violations. The search for Vogt continued for several days until police responded to a call at his home on February 20, 2018. Upon arrival, officers found Vogt dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
